Punxsutawney Phil & Science: When a Groundhog Loses to Math

Punxsutawney Phil emerged, saw his shadow, and confidently told America: “More winter!” NOAA replied, politely: “Statistically… no.”

After 135+ years on the job, Phil’s batting average sits at a chilly 35%—which means your weather app is basically a wizard by comparison. He’s seen his shadow 109 times, committed hard to winter, and still lost to math. Meanwhile, other weather-predicting animals are apparently eating his lunch (and predicting better).

To be fair, Phil isn’t wrong all the time—just most of it. But hey, if accuracy mattered, we’d celebrate Groundhog Day with spreadsheets, not a top-hatted rodent speaking “groundhogese.”
