Legal Negligence Lawsuit Reminds to Prioritise Cybersecurity

Recently a negligence lawsuit was filed against William Cote, a Connecticut lawyer, for allegedly sending over $159,000 from a home sale to a fraudster’s bank account instead of the mortgage-holding bank. Lesley Moody, the homebuyer, filed the lawsuit, stating that the seller’s mortgage encumbers the property’s title due to the mistake. The mistake occurred after Cote’s paralegal received a fraudulent email containing a phony payoff statement from an unknown third party claiming to be the seller. The paralegal forwarded the information to Cote, who wired the money following the fraudulent instructions. As a result, the title to the home that Moody purchased is encumbered by the seller’s mortgage.

This negligence lawsuit serves as a reminder that a single mistake can have significant consequences. It is crucial to exercise diligence and caution when dealing with digital communications in the legal world.
